A leading German telecommunications company wanted to make the sustainability footprint of its IT landscape transparent and useful in day-to-day decisions. Working together, the customer and ITM created an Alfabet-based foundation that connects energy and emissions data with applications, infrastructure and the wider enterprise architecture.
01 The challenge
Turn distributed data into a reliable management view
Relevant data existed in different parts of the organisation, but there was no consolidated view across applications and infrastructure. Hardware and software efficiency was difficult to compare. High-consumption assets were hard to identify. Sustainability information was not yet embedded in established IT management processes.
The objective was much broader than building a single new dashboard. The company needed a reliable basis for understanding IT-related CO₂ emissions and energy consumption. It also wanted to improve data coverage and support ESG reporting.
The same foundation also had to bring sustainability into architecture and portfolio decisions. That meant connecting environmental data with the applications, infrastructure and responsibilities that shape the IT footprint.
02 The approach
Design the solution around business questions
Start with the business questions
IT and sustainability stakeholders needed different views of the same footprint. ITM began by defining the decisions the shared data foundation had to support. These questions guided the model, integrations and reports.
Connect sustainability data to the architecture
Bizzdesign Alfabet provides the architecture and analysis layer. Data from source systems is imported through ADIF and linked to the company’s infrastructure and application objects. Monthly indicators connect CO₂e and energy use with the relevant technical and business context.
Make calculations and data quality traceable
Infrastructure emissions can be aggregated through the architecture to applications and business domains. Defined allocation rules handle shared resources. Monthly time series provide the history needed for trend analysis. Data-quality rules show missing values and ownership gaps to the teams responsible for resolving them.
Build reporting around action
Management views combine emissions trends, hotspots, architecture context and data completeness. They also show underused assets with a significant footprint. Transformation initiatives can then be compared by cost and expected CO₂ reduction.
The result is not another isolated sustainability report. It is sustainability information connected to the architecture decisions that influence the IT footprint.
03 The outcome
A governed foundation for continuous improvement
The company now has a governed foundation for IT sustainability management in Alfabet. It connects sustainability KPIs with architecture context, source data, ownership and reporting.
The project does not present a dashboard as proof that emissions have already fallen. It establishes what continuous improvement requires: traceable data, consistent calculations, visible gaps and a way to measure change over time.
This foundation helps the company identify priorities, evaluate transformation options and strengthen future sustainability and compliance reporting.
